When I first started organizing and saw how many of my clients were paying for storage units — on top of all the stuff they had in their homes — I told my husband we should consider buying stock in one of the storage companies! Well, we never did.
That was 10 years ago, before the self-storage industry exploded. I see people throwing away money month after month, year after year to store items they do not really want or need. For various reasons, they just never get around to going through it all to finally do something with all that stuff.
Several years ago, I worked with a client who had a storage unit for 10 years. When we worked through the unit, which was ¾ full, she decided to go through just five boxes. Of those, she kept one. For easy calculation, let’s say she was paying $100 a month. That’s $1200 a year. Multiply that by 10 years… $12,000! All that money, wasted on storing just one box full of things she actually wanted to keep.
Think of a storage unit like that guest bedroom where you stash things when you don’t know what else to do with them. You toss stuff in there and close the door.
Out of sight, out of mind, right? I don’t believe so. Every time you walk by that door, you feel the mental clutter way deep inside. You may not even be conscious of it. And, of course, you don’t dare open the door because then you will see the physical clutter.
With a paid storage unit, you don’t have to walk by that door every day. What a relief, right? Not so fast. Even if you don’t face it, you know the storage unit is out there, full of big decisions to make and a monthly storage bill to match. That’s a crazy huge stress-inducing burden on your life!
Please stop throwing your money away. Take the time to go through those storage units. Set a date and time with yourself, your family or hire a professional to help you sort through that stuff. Think of all the mental and physical clutter you will be releasing from your life, and all the much better ways you can use that money.
